Sports drop 7-6 decision to El Paso

After scoring 21 runs on 21 hits Thursday at El Paso, the Shreveport Sports banged out 12 hits last night, but came up short in a 7-6 loss to the Diablos. The Sports had several chances to win the game, having three runners thrown out at home plate, hit into three double plays and besides the 12 hits, four El Paso pitchers gave up eight walks. After committing four errors on Thursday, the Sports didn’t help matters last night with three more errors. Deacon Burns and Bryan Cooksey led the hitting attack for the Sports with three hits apiece. Shreveport starter Russell Savickas pitched five innings and took the loss. The Sports and El Paso have split the first two games of the four-game series. The two teams will meet again Saturday at 8:05 pm (Central) at Cohen Stadium in El Paso with the contest to be broadcast on AM 1130, KWKH.

Sports set record in opening win

The Shreveport Sports set an American Association record scoring 21 runs in pounding El Paso 21-5 at El Paso in the opening game of the 2008 season. The record was previously 20 runs scored by Lincoln in 2006. After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, the Sports scored in every inning except the eighth and rolled to an opening night victory. Shreveport scored one run in the second and then took the lead for good on a two-run home run by catcher Justin Humphries in the third inning. Humphries also had a three-run home run in the sixth and finished the night with three hits and five RBI’s. The Sports scored 15 of their 21 runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Shreveport sent 12 batters to the plate in the fifth inning when they scored eight times. In the sixth, the Sports put seven more runs on the board sending ten batters to the plate. Every Sports batter in the starting lineup had at least one hit with Bryan Cooksey leading the way with a four-hit game as the Sports had a total of 21 hits for the night. Pitcher Thad Markray was the starter for the Sports, going five innings to pick up the victory. Bert Snow pitched the final four innings to record a save. The Sports will continue the four-game series tonight at El Paso. Game time will be 8:05 pm (Central) with the game to be broadcast on KEEL (710 AM).

Sports to open season Thursday

The Shreveport Sports will open the 2008 American Association season Thursday (May 8th) at El Paso. This will be the start of a four-game series against the Diablos, who made it to the playoffs last season.

Springhill native Thad Markray, will be the opening night pitcher for the Sports at El Paso. Markray pitched for the Sports in 2004 and has spent the past four seasons in the Kansas City organization. Last season Markray pitched at Triple-A Omaha where he posted an 8-7 record.

Sports manager Terry Bevington is expected to pitched Russell Savickas (Friday), Justin Phillip (Saturday) and Matt Clayman (Sunday) at El Paso.

Game time Thursday will be 8:05 pm (Central) with the game to be broadcast on AM 1130 KWKH,

The Sports will have their home opener Tuesday (May 13th) at Fair Grounds Field against Grand Prairie at 7:05 pm.
